LAKEZIWAY: - It is a shallow fresh water lake which is the widest of the northern rift valley lakes 400 square Kilo meters in area. Extensive aquatic vegetation has made it a favorite habitat of Horns, storks and cormorants the lake is dotted with five islands form which the three were the site of medieval churches. The largest island known as Debre Tsion or Mount Zion is still a site of the monastery, which holds a number of valuable illustrated manuscripts in fact the oldest written Ethiopian records about Axum were found here supporting the belief that the islands were settled by Axumites who fled during the destruction of the city by the female pagan ruler Yodit Gudit.
